      Containing everything from the ocean basins to continents, the crust is the outermost layer of the Earth. Overall, the crust makes up very little of the Earth's mass, so the other layers, which are the mantle, outer core and inner core, are much thicker. The stuff above the Earth is technically NOT part of the Earth. It is part of the Earth system that includes atmosphere and gravity layers. Think about the oxygen particles on the edge of space. They are actually orbiting the earth. The Exosphere is considered to be made up of the particles that are very high up and still inside an earth orbit.

    Earth’s Atmosphere The exosphere is the uppermost layer, where the atmosphere thins out and merges with interplanetary space. It is located directly above the Thermosphere. This tenuous portion of the Earth's atmosphere extends outward until it interacts with the solar wind. Solar storms compress the exosphere.   The climate of a planet is dependent how far it is from the sun, its mass and the composition of its atmosphere. Out of the earth’s atmosphere, 78% is nitrogen, 21% is oxygen while other gases account for only 1%. The water vapor content in the atmosphere varies from 0 to 2% while carbon dioxide accounts for %.
